Whether you’re into spray tans or tanning beds, how you care for your skin afterward plays a significant role in the results. A little post-tan planning can help your glow last longer, look more even, and keep your skin feeling great. Here’s a simple guide on what to do and what to avoid after your tanning session.
Do: Wait Before Showering
If you received a spray tan, it’s essential to avoid showering, sweating, or getting wet for at least 6 to 8 hours after your session. This gives the solution time to fully develop on your skin. For express spray tans, the waiting time may be shorter, depending on the product used. Always follow the specific instructions given at the salon.
If you used a UV tanning bed, you can typically shower whenever you’d like, though some people prefer to wait a few hours to help lock in hydration and avoid stripping the skin too quickly.
Don’t: Use Harsh Products
After tanning, your skin is more sensitive. Try to avoid harsh soaps, exfoliants, or products with alcohol, which can cause uneven fading or dryness. Stick to gentle, sulfate-free body washes and skip loofahs or scrubs for a few days after your session.
If you have a spray tan, using oil-based products can also cause the color to break down faster. Look for products labeled as “spray tan safe” or “tan extending.”
Do: Moisturize Daily
Keeping your skin hydrated is one of the best things you can do after any type of tanning. Moisturize at least once a day to maintain your tan and keep your skin looking smooth and radiant. Choose a moisturizer that’s lightweight, nourishing, and free from ingredients that can interfere with your tan, like mineral oil.
For spray tans, start moisturizing the day after your session and continue daily to help prevent patchiness as your tan fades.
Don’t: Shave or Wax Too Soon
Shaving or waxing right after tanning can cause streaks or remove the top layer of your spray tan. If you need to shave, wait at least 24 hours, and always use a fresh razor and shaving cream to protect your skin. Waxing should be done at least a day or two before your spray tan, not after.
Do: Wear Loose Clothing
Right after your session, stick to loose-fitting clothes and avoid anything tight or restrictive. Tight clothes can rub off a fresh spray tan or irritate UV-exposed skin. Breathable fabrics like cotton are best.
Don’t: Hit the Gym Right Away
Exercise is great, but heavy sweating can cause your spray tan to streak or fade early. Try to skip the gym, saunas, or hot yoga classes for at least 24 hours after your tan.
